Parents, Families and Friends of CHS,
As I sit in my office at CHS writing this letter and looking out the window on a beautiful Michigan summer day, my thoughts turn not to the upcoming school year, but to our students and families. Summer is a great opportunity to rest, relax, refocus and reset ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. Much has been written and discussed regarding summer “brain drain” and the evils of time away from school. I do believe that if this time has been spent constructively, students are prepared to hit the ground running when school begins on August 28.
There has been a lot of activity at CHS this summer. Students from our performing arts, athletic and leadership programs have been active all summer long. Many community camps and activities have taken place within our halls. Work on Clarkston schools bond initiatives continues, as crews rush to complete the athletic field complex, rewire the building and make necessary minor repairs.
Staff members have not just spent the summer months relaxing. Many have engaged in activities which foster professional and personal growth such as professional development activities, college and continuing education classes, book studies, coaching sports teams, supervising extracurricular activities and chaperoning student educational trips...just to name a few.
As school begins, I ask you to challenge your student to leave their comfort zone. There is truly something for everyone at CHS. Research indicates that students who take responsibility for their own learning and are involved in activities, demonstrate significant academic gains and are well-adjusted socially and emotionally. Why not challenge your student to step out of their comfort zone and try a new activity, meet new people and expand their horizons?
I fully anticipate another great year at CHS. We are poised to take on new challenges while we celebrate our successes and cherish our traditions. The Clarkston community is truly a special place to call home and CHS is truly an extension of our community.
